UNS said it received confirmation from the Association of Professional Journalists of Kosovo (AGPK) that the reporter was assaulted by three unknown assailants late on Wednesday, while returning home with his wife.

According to APMG, Olluri's wife fainted during the incident, and both had to be taken to the hospital. The police came to the scene and is investigating the case, UNS said in a statement on Thursday.

Also on Thursday, Tanjug reported, citing Reuters, that Olluri came under attack by unknown perpetrators while returning home with his fiancée.

Local media in Kosovo said that he was lightly injured and receiving treatment in a Pristina hospital.

The motive for the attack - that Reuters said came "days after Olluri wrote an editorial accusing some former commanders of the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA) of corruption" - is unknown at this time.

The agency also reported that "an international watchdog has condemned the beating, calling it 'an attack against freedom of media'," and cited the OSCE mission in Kosovo as saying, "Journalists should be free to state a different opinion without fear of violence or physical injury."

Kosovo's journalists' association "called on authorities to find the attackers," Reuters said, while Kosovo President Hashim Thaci wrote on Facebook: "Journalists should not be discouraged by such criminal acts. On the contrary."
