The trial of former Kolubara strip mines Director Dragan Tomic and his associates has been scheduled for June 25. They were indicted by the Higher Prosecution in Belgrade for malversations during iron procurement which incurred more than RSD 58.8mn of damages to the company. Trial in Kolubara coal mine case to start on June 25 In a proceeding before the Special Court, the Organized Crime Prosecution indicted Tomic and 27 more persons on April 3. They are charged with abuse of power regarding the lease of heavy machines from privately-owned companies and incurring RSD 938mn (about EUR 8.4mn) worth of damages to the company. The trial in that case has not been scheduled yet. Tomic has been in custody since he was arrested on October 2, 2011. He and a group of his associates are charged with abuse of office from June 2004 until December 2008 and they could get up to 12 years in prison. B92’s investigative program Insajder (Insider) series dubbed “Theft of century”, which was aired in early 2011, revealed all the abuses in the Kolubara mines. The program discovered that this was a strategically important state-owned company. About a half of all electricity in Serbia is produced thanks to the coal produced in the mine but individuals had been using it for years for personal gain. Insajder also discovered that money had been transferred to private accounts in several ways. After a several month-long investigation, the B92 investigative program revealed that more than EUR 130mn was transferred to private accounts through the lease of machines from privately-owned companies. Based on the Freedom of Information Law (FOIL), the program obtained documents which showed that the expenditures had drastically increased since 2006 and the key reason for it was the fact that the Kolubara company was paying for the machines even when they were not used.
