EU plans to "continue discussions on South Stream"

Sefcovic said on Tuesday that the project is the subject of regular discussions between relevant member states and the Commission, and that the Commission has so far hosted several meetings with the aim of finding a solution that would be fully in compliance with EU regulations.

"It is obvious that this new development will be an additional element that will be discussed at the meeting," he said.

He added that "the continuously variable energy landscape in the EU" was another reason for the Union to build a "sustainable energy community, with a climate policy which plans for the future."

"One of the priorities for the Energy Union will be security of energy suppliesy," said the commissioner.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Monday his country was forced to withdraw from the South Stream project because the EU did not want to support the construction of the pipeline.

European Commission spokeswoman Anna-Kaisa Itkonen said on Tuesday in Brussels that EU's attitude toward South Stream has not changed and that "gas pipelines built in Europe must operate in accordance with EU regulations."
