Europe continues to suffer at the hands of the severe weather. In France traffic came to a halt as snow and ice made driving treacherous. More severe weekend weather to hit Europe The national weather service says 55 of the country’s 100 departments are on high alert and further heavy snowfall is expected exacerbated by strong north winds. In the south-east of the country the situation “could become critical” according to forecasters. Meanwhile, Eurostar has cancelled nearly half of its services due to snow in southern England and domestic trains in France have also been hit. Britain is now a snow clad kingdom with temperatures diving well below freezing with more snow and bitter winds predicted over the weekend. Two brothers lost their lives after they fell into a frozen lake in a country park in Leicester and the emergency services are struggling to reach outlying areas. As the big freeze continues the government has called on local councils to reduce the amount of salt on the roads by a quarter to conserve supplies. In Germany households have been told to stock up on essentials as the country braces itself for blizzards and snow.
