Two Roma from Kursumlija say they were assaulted by 3 policemen who forcibly extracted confessions from them. Brothers Toni and Ivica Jovanovic filed charges against the policemen after they were arrested a few days ago on suspicion of stealing a water gauge. Roma claim police "beat confession out of them" The brothers were then taken into custody in Kursumlija police station, where they were brutally beaten, and were coerced into confessing, even though an investigation later proved that two other individuals had committed the crime. "They started punching us and beating us with truncheons, as soon as we were brought into the station. One of them, who beat us the worst, pointed his gun at me and told me to confess that I had stolen some kind of water gauges. After several hours of beatings, we had to confess, even though it was not the truth,” recounted Toni. Police held the Jovanovic brothers in custody for four hours. Meanwhile, a police investigation revealed that the theft that the brothers were accused of had in fact been committed by somebody else. The incident was brought to the attention of the Roma Association in Kursumlija, in whose presence the Jovanovic brothers filed charges against the three policemen. Kursumlija police confirmed to Beta that charges had been pressed against the three officers, and that an investigation would be launched. They did not want to reveal the policemen’s identities.
