Galić sentenced to life in prison

Tribunal president Fausto Pocar, who presided over the Appeals Chamber, said that the former Sarajevsko-Romanijski Bosnian Serb Army Corps commander’s responsibility was underestimated in the original verdict, thus granting the prosecution’s appeal.

The Chamber at the same time dismissed all 19 counts of the appeal submitted by Galić’s defense, which asked for his acquittal or a substantial reduction of the sentence. The prosecution considered that "the only adequate punishment for the cowardly and vicious crime of terrorizing civilians" was life sentence.

The final judgment was not reached unanimously.

The decision marks the first Hague Tribunal judgment sentencing a defendant to life in prison.
