War crimes general to be set free

Former Croatian general Mirko Norac, found guilty and sentenced to 15 years in prison for war crimes against Serb civilians, is set to be released from prison.

Former Croatian general Mirko Norac, found guilty and sentenced to 15 years in prison for war crimes against Serb civilians, is set to be released from prison. Norac has served 10 years or two thirds of his sentence. War crimes general to be set free The conditional release, expected to take place on Friday, was approved despite protests from non-governmental organizations, which complained that Norac had not expressed regret for his actions. Imprisoned in minimum security facilities since March 2001, Norac was regularly allowed weekend and holiday leave. While serving his war crimes sentenced, he got married and fathered two children, and graduated from college. He was sentenced to 12 years for planning and carrying out the liquidation of several dozen Serb civilians in the Gospic region in 1991. For the crimes in Medak Pocket in 1993, he was sentenced to seven years based on command responsibility. This was reduced to six years by the Supreme Court. Later, the Croatian Supreme Court set down a single sentence of 15 years for both crimes. Croatian President Ivo Josipovic stripped Norac of his general's rank in September 2010, along with two other generals, Branimir Glavas and Vladimir Zagorac, who were also convicted of war crimes.
