Newly-elected Croatian President Ivo Josipovic said that Croatia is dedicated to leading peaceful policies. Josipovic said that he was not surprised by Serbian President Boris Tadic’s statements before the UN Security Council in which he accused Croatia of “threatening with weapons,” because of the statements of exiting President Stjepan Mesic regarding the possible military intervention in case of a referendum in the Republic of Srpska (RS) for seceding from Bosnia-Herzegovina. “Croatia for peaceful policies” “This move, which does not surprise me, was used by Tadic more for the domestic than international public. To everyone with good intentions, it is obvious that Croatia is leading very constructive and peaceful policies. Other countries of the UN have talked about this,” Josipovic said. He said that Mesic’s statement was not a call to war, because no one wants that. He added that it was a “higher metaphor, a desire to say that unity in Bosnia-Herzegovina should be preserved.” He said that it is of strategic importance for Croatia for Bosnia-Herzegovina to be stable, and for the Croatian people in that country to have equal rights. He said that this is Croatia’s most important goal in relation to Bosnia. Josipovic said that Croatia’s chief interest is to “calm the situation in the region and turn towards cooperation.” Ivo Josipovic (Beta archive)
