STRASBOURG The European Parliament (EP) adopted Rapporteur Jelko Kacin’s report on Serbia’s progress in the EU integration with a majority of votes on Thursday. The final text of the resolution will be available on Friday, April 19. EP adopts report on Serbia’s progress Ahead of the vote, Kacin once again called on Serbian and Kosovo leaders to reach a compromise and allow the European integration process to continue. At the EP’s plenary session on Wednesday, Kacin called on the European Council to set a date for the beginning of Serbia’s EU accession talks and expressed hope that the Belgrade-Pristina dialogue would give results by the end of the week. “I honestly hope that the meeting of the Serbian and Kosovo prime ministers which is underway will bring results by the end of the week. A breakthrough would have far-reaching consequences for the both countries’ European integration and the Western Balkans as a whole, as well as for the economic recovery of the crisis-hit region,” the EP rapporteur noted on Wednesday. “I hope we will have an opportunity to make a toast to a historic agreement between Serbia and Kosovo by the end of the week,” he added. In his report, Kacin assessed that Serbia had made significant progress in some reforms and called on the Council to set a date for the start of the EU accession talks with Serbia because it was in the best interest of Serbia and Europe. EU Enlargement Commissioner Stefan Fule, who also addressed MEPs, assessed that Kacin’s report was comprehensive and that it reflected Serbia’s progress. “We have once again reached a turning point. I hope that Pristina and Belgrade can reach new results in the dialogue and that it will end with a clear agreement in the best interest of Serbia and Kosovo as well as their citizens, the Balkans and the EU itself,” Fule noted. He also expressed his support to the Serbian government’s “brave moves” in an effort to reach a solution. (FoNet, file) B92 Tanjug
