Foreign Minister Vuk Jeremic says that he expects relations between Belgrade and Washington to improve with the arrival of a new administration. “Relations with the U.S. cannot be much worse than they are now. They can only get better,” Jeremic told students at Charles University in Prague, where he gave a lecture. Washington dictated the peace conditions that were entered into United Nations Security Council Resolution 1244. It states that Kosovo is a part of Serbia. Nine years later, Serbia is a democratic country, a regional leader, that wants to become a member of the European Union. Washington, however, said that Serbia now had to pay the debts of the defeated dictatorship, even though it runs counter to international law,” the minister said. He said that EU integration was Serbia’s chief priority, but that Belgrade wanted to maintain its special relations with Moscow. Russia would remain a close friend and ally to Serbia, Jeremic underlined. Vuk Jeremic (FoNet archive)
