US not prejudging the solution

After his two-day stay in Belgrade, Wisner said that he cannot tell whether the end decision will be reached easily and whether it will be acceptable for all, but he stressed that there is no doubt in what must be done; an agreement must be reached that will protect the minorities and enable them to lead a decent life in all aspects of the future.

He said that Belgrade and Priština must, in this “sped-up phase” of discussions, offer flexibility, and that the US expects full commitment from both sides to the discussions so that a realistic solution can be found.

Securing the rights of minorities, their safety, economic and political positions, are the key principles which will lead the continuation of the discussions. The US will carefully follow whether these principles are being respected, Wisner said.

Wisner repeated that the Contact Group is firm in its position that Kosovo cannot be divided and that the US will stand against any decision or steps that are taken in that direction.

“The situation in Kosovo is not ‘black,’ because progress has been made in the last seven years, in relation to 1999, even if there is a lot more that needs to be done.” Wisner said.
