Oliver Ivanovic says vandalism directed against Serbian Orthodox churches in Kosovo must be penalized and condemned by the international community. Commenting on the recent desecration of a church in the village of Samodreza near Vucitrn, the Kosovo Ministry state secretary told Tanjug today that preventing such events was a serious task for the local police and community. "The vandalism against Serbian Orthodox churches discourages people from returning to Kosovo. We seriously and openly question their honesty. If local politicians are not willing to condemn these events, then it must be done by representatives of the international community, who have certain instruments at their disposal," Ivanovic said. The Orthodox church in Samodreza, which is said to be the place where the Serb medieval kingdom's army received communion before the Battle of Kosovo in 1389, has been vandalized again. The Kosovo Strategic Action Network (KSAM) announced on Friday the church was vandalized several days earlier, with the door being broken and the building turned into "a garbage dump and a public toilet". The SPC holy places in the province have been targeted by ethnic Albanians in the past, most notably during the 1999 war, and the 2004 pogrom of Serbs.
