BELGRADE Serbian Deputy Prime Minister Aleksandar Vucic stated on Thursday that Serbia lost billions of euros in dubious privatizations. He announced that new investigations would start as of Monday. Deputy PM announces new probes into privatizations “The country suffered damages worth billions of euros,” he told parliament and added that the aim was not to make arrests but to discover where the money went and try to restore some of it to the state. The deputy PM noted that he was not saying this was always a possibility because some of these privatizations took place as far back as ten years ago but that the government would try to carry out this measure. “One thing is certain - the scope of organized robbery was dramatic,” Vucic said. Noting that nobody would be protected in the process, he underscored that all activities would be implemented with a view to providing assistance to prosecutors engaged in the investigation of dubious privatizations included in the EU list. “The government and competent government bodies have an obligation to counter corruption systemically,” Vucic concluded.
