Vuk Jeremic and Louise Arbour say that the current state of human rights in Kosovo is unacceptable. The foreign minister said that he had asked the UN human rights high commissioner to dedicate herself to the situation in Kosovo, and the UN Council Human Rights Committee to pay special care to the protection of human rights in the province. “Human rights in unacceptable state in Kosovo” Jeremic added that Serbia was fighting for every vote against Kosovo independence in the UN, and that the goal was to have a majority of UN countries against recognition of Kosovo’s unilateral independence by September, when the General Assembly is due to meet. “There are dozens of international organizations, and we will fight in each one with all the means at our disposal to make sure that Kosovo is not accepted into any of those institutions. I had a successful meeting with the International Labor Organization, and I expect a successful meeting with the International Telecommunication Union,” the foreign minister said. “Geneva is the headquarters of such organizations. We will use this chance to visit them all. The key to our victory in this round of diplomatic battles is, first of all, to have as small a number of countries recognizing the illegal declaration of Kosovo independence as possible, and secondly, not to allow Kosovo access to any international organizations, primarily the UN and the OSCE, but others as well,” he explained. Jeremic met yesterday with his counterparts from India and Vietnam who, he said, strongly opposed Kosovo independence and any violation of international law. India and Vietnam will, according to Jeremic, maintain such a stance in all organizations, above all in the Non-Aligned Movement.
