Merkel, however, remains convinced that this policy was "right from the start.""It is necessary to restore people's trust in the possibility of integration of migrants, as well as to consistently deport those who do not qualify for asylum," Merkel said on Monday, adding she was "convinced this was the way to calm Germany down."
German Vice Chancellor and head of the SDP party Sigmar Gabriel, meanwhile. criticized the migration policy of Merkel that led to the failure of her CDU party in elections in the province of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.
Gabriel accused Merkel's conservatives of being too slow to respond to the migrant crisis, which resulted in the success of right-wing Alternative for Germany (AfD) in the regional election held in this province on Sunday.
The ruling CDU finished third while the SDP took the most votes. The AfD was second - a great success for the right-wing party, which was running in provincial elections for the first time.
The voting on Sunday was the first of five regional ballots to be held before the general election in Germany in 2017.
The AfD, which strongly criticizes the policy of welcoming migrants to Germany, took 20.8 percent of the vote. All other parties won fewer votes than before, with the SDP receiveing 30.5 percent, while the CDU won about 19 percent.
