Poroshenko "not against" Donbass referendum

More than 6,000 died during the war in eastern Ukraine that has been fought for more than a year between pro-Russian rebels and forces of the government in Kiev.

When the conflict started, demonstrators in eastern regions asked for a referendum that would give them greater autonomy, but the Ukrainian government refused.

Poroshenko spoke while attending a parliamentary commission drafting amendments to the Constitution, "and stated in a televised meeting that if the commission decides a vote is important, he would not stand in the way of a referendum."

"I am prepared to launch a referendum on the concern of state governance if you make a decision it is necessary," he stated, but added he "opposed the idea of federalization, which Russia has advocated," AP said.
