U.S. vice president warns Russia could suffer "greater cost"

"(We) have agreed that if Russia undermines these elections on Sunday we must remain resolute in imposing greater costs on Russia and we must be equally resolute to invest in the NATO alliance," Biden told reporters after meeting Romanian President Traian Basescu, Reuters reported.

Biden arrived in Bucharest on Tuesday "as part of Washington's campaign to reassure east European allies of U.S. backing in the West's confrontation with Russia over Ukraine," the news agency reported.

One of the topics of Biden's meetings with Romanian officials is Moldavia, whose breakaway region of Pridnestrovie has 1,500 Russian troops.

Romana has 1,029 of its troops in NATO's mission in Afghanistan, while the U.S. have a base in the Black Sea port port of Constanta, which serves as a center for deployments in Afghanistan.

Biden will also visit Cyprus as part of his tour.
