WASHINGTON The United States have opposed the Palestinian bid to join the UN as a non-member country, which President Mahmoud Abbas plans to request later this month. "We will continue to speak clearly: we think that direct negotiations (with Israel) is the only realistic way to get a Palestinian state," said State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said, adding that Washington was "in contact with President Abbas". U.S. opposes Palestinian admission to UN Israeli-Palestinian peace talks were interrupted in September 2010, and the international community has so far unsuccessful in putting pressure on the two sides to return to the negotiating table. "We are working hard, through the Middle East Quartet (the UN, U.S., EU, Russia) and directly with the Israelis and Palestinians, in order to encourage them to return to the (negotiating) table," said Nuland. "All we can do is encourage it. We cannot force them. It's up to them to decide to make peace," she added. Abbas on Saturday announced he would take steps for admission of Palestine to the United Nations as a non-member state on September 27, in a speech he will give before the UN General Assembly. "We will go to the UN General Assembly on September 27 and seek admission of Palestine as a non-member state," said Abbas. To be adopted, a UN General Assembly resolution must be supported by more than half of the 193 UN member-states. (file) Beta
