MOSCOW Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has said that there would be no change in the position of Russia on the crisis in Syria. His statement came on the eve of talks in Moscow with the envoy of the UN and the Arab League, Kofi Annan. FM: Russia will not change position on Syria The calls for Russia to "influence the Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to resign" are unrealistic, because the Syrian leader will not leave power, Lavrov said at a news conference. "It is simply unrealistic. He will not leave power. And that us not because of it we (Russia) are protecting him, but because there is a very important part of the Syrian population, which stands by him," said Lavrov, according to an AFP agency report. The Russian minister added that there were "unfortunately, elements of blackmail because of the draft resolution on Syria to be discussed in the (UN) Security Council": "If our Western partners do not recognize the fact that if they block our resolution on the conflict (in Syria), then the UN Observer Mission will not have a mandate and will have to leave Syria, it is indeed regrettable." Russia advocates an extension of the mandate of the UN mission in Syria. Lavrov reiterated that his country fully supports the peace plan presented by Kofi Annan, but that "some Western powers have distorted the meaning of the document in order to push through the removal of President Assad in Syria," reports Russia Today. Annan will arrive in Moscow on Monday for a meeting with Lavrov. The two are expected to "consider the situation in Syria and the possibility of its resolution", according to reports. On Tuesday, Annan is scheduled to meet with President Vladimir Putin. Sergei Lavrov (Tanjug, file) Tanjug
