Lots of comments on these issues bring out the narrow anti-US rhetoric common amongst the more rabid anti-NATO posters on this site.

Unusually, the postings on this page are more supportive of the Syrian people and more despising of the Russian position than usual.

Personally, I thing that Assad should be declared an outlaw and shot on site. Unfortunately international law makes that impossible.

In the meantime, I would wish those displaying the bigotries mentioned above, the joy of living under the kind of dictatorship they apparently support. They would not live there long I suspect.

I love reading comments from the lovers of freedom and democracy or people that wouldn’t know what that means if it hit them in the head. They say get rid of a dictator; give democracy to the people; freedom and so on.
Let’s look at the history of Syria. Who brought the Assad family to power? The United States of America, just as it brought to power Saddam Hussein. Both Syria and Iraq governments were overthrown by members of the Ba’ath Party with the money and help of the US and brought Assad senior and Hussein to power. Funny how that part is always left out of any story written by the free press.
Look at the so called Arab spring, what has it brought to power? The Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt and other fundamentalists across north Africa. What has west achieved in Libya? The western media paraded an election there, but what they failed to say is that nearly half of the population did not have a chance to vote, nothing was achieved. The list of failures runs long and hard starting from Afghanistan to Tunisia. The US is like a spoilt child running through a house breaking everything then expecting the world to fix it right.

The same u said for Iraq,Lybia,Egypt etc who used to be ruled by dictators.Even when was clear that the dictators was losing power.
Even the Moscow press(broad here by B 92) citing sources inside russian political circles know that Assad has 10% chance to stay in power. In you know this and give the above statement,it means that u r shortsighted politican or fool.
Regarding that u wander that Russian have been diminished in the world?
Soon u will be without the sole military base in Mediterranian,if u think and act like nothing is happening in Syria.

Lavrov is 100% correct. Look at Egypt and Libya. The West supported the rebells and now have talibans incharge of those countries. Let them fight their own wars instead of have America interfear in every conflict they have money to make. I didn't see America give a damn about Rwanda. They are only sucking up to arabs for the oil.

wow man, you use the word "we" as if you are representing some Syria! From your name i take it you are greek (like me). Well, the Greek/Orthodox of Syria have suffered tremendous losses due to the fascist/terrorist islamist guerrilla groups that are trained/armed and financed by the west, and of whom many were not even born in Syria. That is the real picture. A country under total western violence.

Mr Kafantaris, you should be ashamed.

"It is simply unrealistic. He will not leave power. And that us not because of it we (Russia) are protecting him, but because there is a very important part of the Syrian population, which stands by him," said Lavrov, according to an AFP agency report.

Yes, there is a very important part which stands by him. The Alawites, the ethnic/religious group he's coming from and which enjoys all the benefits and state-payed jobs, including army. They might be 'important', but are a minority (about 12%)

"If our Western partners do not recognize the fact that if they block our resolution on the conflict (in Syria), then the UN Observer Mission will not have a mandate and will have to leave Syria, it is indeed regrettable."

What sense does an UN observer mission have when it only can observe the killings, and there are no consequences following their observations in the end. When observers can only go to places Syrian army allows, and only after things are 'cleaned up'. For the same reason, the observers from the Arab League left Syria after a while.

Surprise, surprise.
Russia again says that the U.N. should not boot out Assad from Syria.
And again we are shocked, dismayed and disappointed.
Why?
Russia and China have their own reasons not to lift a finger in Syria -- but we are not waiting for them anymore.
Rather, we will join other countries willing help to take care of the necessary business in Syria -- just as we had done in Libya.
This time around, Russia and China had their chance to be part of the solution. Over and over, they have refused -- less they ultimately rattle their own house of cards.
Fine.
But their inaction has committed them to getting out of the way. They can do so and save face, or that they can continue to be obstreperous and lose more face.
Either way, we are moving forward without them.
As for Lavrov’s claim that the West is blackmailing Russia, most countries see it the other way around.

The calls for Russia to "influence the Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to resign" are unrealistic, because the Syrian leader will not leave power, Lavrov said at a news conference. Ya what do they think Bashar would leave his between the ears King kingdom and revert back to being a dentist. Looking into old grannies smelly mouths and naughty kids cavities when now he has with his mental retarded deranged supporters card blanch to murder them. Russia "elite" thousands of times removed from sanity see nothing wrong with that. They have been murdering their people and other peoples in the millions for century's. In their thinking you have to put fear in the peasants not to question the wolfs and what insidious Satanic alliances with vile evils they have.
