The European Parliament supports the creation of a Palestinian state within the 1967 borders, with eastern Jerusalem as its capital. European Parliament President Jerzy Buzek made the statement in his address to the Israeli Knesset on Wednesday. EP: Eastern Jerusalem should go to Palestinians Reports said that Buzek stated the solution with the 1967 borders should include "agreed land swaps". Supporting U.S. President Barack Obama's May 19 address on the issue, Buzek however noted that "direct peace negotiations are the only solution". On Tuesday, he was in the West Bank where he told Palestinian leaders that the EP was opposed to their plans to unilaterally seek recognition of Palestine as an independent state at the UN in September. "Israel has a fundamental right to exist. Immediate progress in peace negotiations is more needed today than ever. We cannot afford the status quo," Buzek was quoted as saying in Jerusalem today. But Israeli PM Binyamin Netanyahu recently rejected any division of Jerusalem and withdrawal to the 1967 lines, which he described as indefensible. In 1967, Israel came under attack from a number of neighboring Arab states, but ended the war in only six days capturing the West Bank, the Gaza Strip, the Sinai Peninsula, and the Golan Heights.
