Riot police have broken up a protest rally outside the parliament in the Georgian capital, Tbilisi, RFE/RL reported. Police used water cannon and tear gas to disperse hundreds of protesters demanding President Mikheil Saakashvili resign. Police disperse protest in Georgian capital An interior ministry spokesman said one policemen had died and at least 18 others injured in the operation that began just after midnight. Shota Utiashvili said the policeman who died was hit by a vehicle in a convoy of cars driving away from the protest, one of which was carrying opposition leader Nino Burjanadze. An opposition leader, Nona Gaprindashvili, says dozens of demonstrators were arrested. A Reuters reporter saw a riot policeman beat one protester with a baton. Emergency workers were tending to several people with blood on their faces. Protesters had refused to end five days of protests in the capital to make way for an Independence Day military parade planned for later today. Protesters accuse the 43-year-old pro-Western Saakashvili of monopolizing power since the 2003 Rose Revolution. "The people of Georgia seek nothing more than freedom to determine their own future, and for too long their wishes have been swept to one side by President Saakashvili's iron-fisted authoritarian rule," Burjanadze said in a statement before the protest.
