Twenty miners died on Monday in Slovakia's Handlova coal mines, the country's Economy Minister Lubomir Jahnatek has confirmed. Rescuers managed to recover six bodies so far from 330 meters below the surface, and 656 meters from what is described as the blast's epicenter. 20 miners perish in Slovakia explosion The deadly accident occurred as miners were trying to put out a small fire in one of the shafts. Nine of them managed to escape with light injuries. Miners complained during the past several days that they could smell methane, but the company said that it appeared the explosion was caused by carbon monoxide. The company also admitted that small fires did break out lately, but that "miners managed to put them out and continue to close off that part of the shaft so that air could not reach the coal".
