President Vaclav Klaus officially unveils the man set to become the Czech Republic’s next prime minister. Jan Fischer, a non-aligned technocrat and former head of the Czech Statistical office, will take over from current premier Mirik Topolanek, whose center right cabinet toppled last month. Interim Czech PM appointed It’s hoped the new appointment will draw a line under a political crisis that has threatened to undermine the country’s six month EU presidency. Fischer is expected to pick his cabinet next week, beginning in May and staying on until elections in October. His appointment comes as the Czech upper house parliament prepares to vote on ratifying the EU’s Lisbon treaty. However, sceptics are predicting a limited agenda from the new government expecting it to focus on seeing out the EU presidency, which ends in June, and preparing next year’s budget in response to the economic downturn.
