Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez says he has sent troops to take control of the country's rice-producing sector, accusing it of causing food scarcities. Chavez, in a televised address Saturday, also warned he would nationalize the entire rice sector if they go on refusing to obey a law requiring them to produce the variety of rice for which the price is fixed by the government, the Latin American Herald Tribune reported. Chavez sends troops to rice producers "I have ordered the intervention starting now of all those agribusiness sectors," Chavez said, adding he has ordered soldiers to "take over all those companies that process rice … We won't let them go on making fools of the people or of the revolutionary government." Chavez said he was informed by Agricultural Minister Elias Jaua that "there are sectors of agribusiness that refuse to obey the law" and grow the price-fixed variety. "What are some agribusiness sectors doing? They're buying rice from producers and don't want to produce the rice that is regulated!" the Tribune quoted Chavez saying, adding he also accused unnamed businessmen of threatening to go on strike.
