The U.S. military death toll in Iraq in May could have been the lowest monthly toll of the war, the Los Angeles Times reported Saturday. U.S. military officials announced Saturday a Marine had been killed Friday in a non-combat incident in Iraq, bringing the total number of U.S. soldiers killed in Iraq to 4,086. However, the LA Times cited the independent Web site icasualties.org, which counted 19 military deaths in Iraq in May - which would be the lowest monthly toll since the March 2003 invasion, provided no further deaths are recorded. The lowest previous toll was 20 in February 2004. The number of Iraqi civilian deaths fell to 504 in May from 923 in April, Iraqi Health Ministry figures indicated.

Officials said it was the 21st U.S. military death in the Iraq War.

However, the LA Times cited the independent Web site icasualties.org, which counted 19 military deaths in Iraq in May - which would be the lowest monthly toll since the March 2003 invasion, provided no further deaths are recorded.

The lowest previous toll was 20 in February 2004.

The number of Iraqi civilian deaths fell to 504 in May from 923 in April, Iraqi Health Ministry figures indicated.
