Should Georgia "activate a violent scenario", Moscow will take countermeasures to protect its nationals, Sergei Lavrov says. Georgia's inability to make an agreement with Russia is largely tied to the plans to have this country join NATO, the Russian foreign minister said Friday in London, after a meeting of the Middle East Quartet. We'll defend what's ours in Georgia, says Lavrov He also expressed hope tat Georgia, "and those dragging her to NATO", will "reach some conclusions", after Moscow undertook "certain measures recently". Lavrov, who met with U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, said the decision to send an additional 1,000 Russian peacekeepers to Georgia's breakaway region of Abkhazia was in line with existing agreements. "In order to avoid any type of provocation, in order to send a signal so that this provocation does not take place, a decision was made to bring the peacekeeping forces to their full numbers. Their task is to ensure peace and safety, to prevent renewed bloodshed in the region," Lavrov said. He also welcomed Washington's assurances that it "continues to work with Tbilisi, in order to make sure there are no moves are planned that could make the situation more tense". About 80 percent of residents of Georgia's South Ossetia and Abkhazia regions also hold the passports of the Russian Federation.
