More than 1.3 million citizens of Serbia are poor or barely making ends meet, Serbian Minister of Labor and Social Policy Rasim Ljajic said Wednesday. “About 700,000 people in Serbia live below the poverty line, 178,000 of the citizens receive social assistance and 343,000 pensioners get a pension below RSD 11,000 (about EUR 100),” he pointed out while presenting data on socially vulnerable population categories in all cities and municipalities in Serbia. “More than 1.3 million Serbian citizens poor” According to the data on the socio-economic situation in Serbia's municipalities, around 50,000 people eat in soup kitchens and about 70,000 families are beneficiaries of the material support for poor families. “Serbia can be said to have lost the middle class category,” stressed Ljajic. “The data show that 40 percent of material support recipients, or about 70,000 individuals, live in Vojvodina, which seems illogical because the province is the richest part of Serbia besides Belgrade,” the labor minister pointed out. “The smallest number of material support beneficiaries lives in Golubac, Gucevo and Soko Banja, and generally in eastern Serbia, which is among the poorer regions in the country,” he said. Ljajic accounted for this by saying it might be due to the better accessibility to information for citizens in Vojvodina and less restrictive interpretation of legal regulations. The minister said that of the total number of recipients of social benefits, about one third, or 23,566 families, lived in rural areas. “We even came to the data that there are 42,279 single-person households in the country,” he explained. Of the 727,000 unemployed persons, 94,997 of them are in the labor market, have over 55 years of age and thus fall in the hard-to-employ category. “More than 21,000 of them have lost the right to a financial aid of the National Employment Service,” said Ljajic. “In Serbia there are 373,902 pensioners who receive the lowest pensions of below RSD 11,000, of which number 201,000 are farmers,” he said. The data for the social map of Serbia were collected over three years, and it is not final and will be constantly updated with new data. The labor minister said that the map should contribute to and facilitate the realization of the right to social assistance and provide better access to information for potential users of social care services.
