One of the Serbian police (MUP) officers deployed as UN peacekeepers in Haiti says that the recent earthquake left Port-au-Prince “literally unrecognizable”. Goran Panovic, one of five Serb police officers deployed on the island, told Belgrade daily Vecernje Novosti that he saw destroyed buildings, desperate people in search for their loved ones, and overcrowded hospitals a day after the devastating quake. Beside Panovic, the team consists of leader Biljana Lazarevic, and Milos Rajovic, Bozidar Janjic and Slobodan Obrenovic. According to Panovic, the hardest-hit areas were the shantytowns, where homes are made of concrete blocks which collapsed easily. “Those weak constructions have literally been leveled to the ground. The remains of the police directorate building are no higher than one meter,” said he. Panovic added that, with disrupted communications, it was difficult to estimate the number of victims, but that in the parts of Port-au-Prince that he’d seen, the number of dead was “horrifically high”. “There is no electricity, food or water in Port-au-Prince, the situation is more than dramatic. Nobody is going back to their apartments, parks are full of makeshift tents, thousands of desperate people are sitting on the streets,” Panovic described the Haitian capital. The MUP team will remain in Haiti, leader Biljana Lazarevic reported to Interior Minister Ivica Dacic on Thursday, now tasked with helping the survivors in the aftermath of the earthquake.
