No one was injured as some 20 makeshift Roma homes burned early this morning in a fire in Belgrade's Zarkovo neighborhood. The fire broke out at 03:15 CET and engulfed about 20 small structures that provided housing for 100 people, made of cardboard, wood and tin, said Serbian police (MUP) Rescue and Protection Sector chief Predrag Maric. Fire in makeshift Roma settlement 11 firefighters with four vehicles responded and put out the blaze, he explained, and said his men were still at the scene this morning. Maric also stated that they were in contact with the city hall in order to provide housing for the Roma from the settlement, located under a bridge. The cause of the fire is still unknown. An optical cable belonging to Telekom Srbija also burned in the fire. The telecommunications company announced that their users relying on 50 mobile telephony base stations in various parts of the town were left without service this morning. Telekom said that they expected the situation to normalize in several hours.
