Belgrade marks the 64th anniversary of its liberation from German occupation in World War 2. The city was liberated in joint operation by the People’s Liberation Army and a Red Army unit on October 20, 1944, led by Generals Peko Dapcevic and Vladimir Zhdanov respectively. Belgrade marks anniversary of liberation President Boris Tadic will place a wreath at the Monument to Belgrade’s Liberators today to mark the event. Tadic and Belgrade Mayor Dragan Djilas will also lay wreaths at the Liberators’ cemetery in the capital. Belgrade Deputy Mayor Milan Krkobabic will lay a wreath in the same place at noon, before paying his respects to the Red Army’s soldiers at the Soviet Veteran’s Monument in Avala, along with representatives of the Defense Ministry, the City of Belgrade, the Russian, Belarussian and Ukrainian embassies, and members of the SUBNOR World War 2 veterans' association. In the operation to retake the city, the People’s Liberation Army lost 2,994 men, with as many as 3,379 injured, while the Red Army suffered 960 dead and 1,100 injured.
