Trial of Ademi and Norac begins in Zagreb

The indictment was prepared for over two years and is the first and only process that the Hague Tribunal has transferred to the Croatian judiciary.

Norac is already serving a 12-year sentence for crimes committed against Serbian civilians in the region of Gospić.

Court official Krešimir Devčić said that the case will be of the highest standards and open to the public.

“The first part, the beginning of the main arguments, will last until Wednesday, June 20. The public will be invited, the public and journalists, though there is a limited number of seats in the courtroom, so everyone interested must be announced, they must leave their personal information, in order to make a list of how many seats in the courtroom have been filled,” Krešimir Devčić said.

The Croatian State Prosecutor’s Office called for the testimony of 137 witnesses, 34 of which are protected.

The indictment was finalized at the end of last year; more than a year after the Tribunal transferred the case to Croatia.

The indictment claims that the generals knew about the crimes and that they did nothing to stop them from occurring, making them responsible for the killing of civilians and prisoners of war, destruction of homes and pillaging after military actions.

About 100 Serbs were killed and at least 100 homes were destroyed in villages of the Gospić region.
