Judge asks for police protection

The letter was sent by Zoran Tošanić, husband of Svetlana Tošanić, who was on trial in what the media dubbed  the Baby Affair.

Several parents have alleged that their babies were declared dead at birth, only to later be put up for illegal adoptions. The bodies of the babies were never released to their parents.

In this case, Froku sentenced pediatric nurse Tošanić and two co-workers to six months in prison. Her husband, dissatisfied with the ruling, left a letter in the mailbox of the Kragujevac Municipal Court.

“The letter contains insults aimed at me as a judge and person, but also threatens, telling us to think harder the next time we hand out verdicts because we are deciding on people's futures. I found out that Zoran Tošanić is a former employee of the Internal Affairs Ministry, and also a hunter, and literally armed to the teeth,” Froku told B92.

She said that she took the threats very seriously and has asked for protection.

Tošanić said that the letter is not threatening.

“There were no threats. The letter was written with good intentions in an effort to show the mistakes which she obviously did not see, but drastically affected the verdict,” Tošanić said.

Froku is asking for protection from both the Supreme Court and the Justice Ministry.

“I want the public to know what is going on here, not only with me, but with other judges, because obviously everyone can insult a judge and threaten him or her, and the state only reacts when a judge is murdered,” Froka said.

Her verdict in the case was met by criticism by both sides, the defense for the conviction and by the prosecution for the light sentence handed out.
