Migrants cut through Hungary's border fence

Reporters asked Hungarian government spokesman Zoltan Kovacs "why the fence is at this time only half as tall as planned." Kovacs told the MTI agency that this was the case "only temporarily" and that works to build it "will be carried out according to original plans and in several phases."

"The quickest solution is to build it with barbed wire, which is now being done," he said.

Hungary decided to built this fence along the 175 kilometers of its border with Serbia to stem the tide of illegal migrants arriving through Serbia from third countries.

The fence should be completed by August 31. According to Kovacs, "110,000 illegal migrants have so far crossed the border."

"It is the essential interest of Hungary and the EU for the border to be physically sealed as soon as possible," Tanjug reported.
