EU interior ministers voted today to abolish visas for the citizens of Bosnia-Herzegovina and Albania. EU Commissioner for Home Affairs Cecilia Malmstrom assessed that this is a historic day for the two countries. EU abolishes visas for Bosnia and Albania "The citizens of these countries will soon be able to travel visa-free with biometric passports to the EU countries which implement the common visa policy and are part of the Schengen area," Malmstrom said after the decision was passed at a meeting of the EU Home Affairs Council. Malmstrom also pointed out, however, that the abolishment of visas brings new responsibilities for the governments and citizens of the two countries. Earlier in the visa liberalization process for the countries in the Western Balkans, we noticed a rise in unfounded asylum requests. This caused great concern in the EU and prompted the European Commission to set up a mechanism for post-visa monitoring with a view to preventing abuse of asylum procedures, she noted.
