More than 5,000 police officers rallied in downtown Sofia Sunday to demand a pay increase and better equipment to fight crime. Participants gathered peacefully in a park near the Embassy of the Czech Republic, which holds the rotating European Union presidency. They handed a petition with their demands to the Czech Ambassador, to be brought to the attention of the EU. Over 5,000 police rally in Bulgaria The police officers were unarmed and in civilian clothes because the law bans police from staging strikes and protests in uniform. The union for Bulgaria's 63,000-strong police force has demanded a 50 percent wage increase. The government has said that in the current economic crisis wages can be increased by a maximum of 5 percent.
