Sarajevo commemorates market massacre

Yesterday marked the 15th anniversary of the Sarajevo Markale Market massacre and the annual Remembrance Day for Sarajevans who died from 1992 to 1995.

Yesterday marked the 15th anniversary of the Sarajevo Markale Market massacre and the annual Remembrance Day for Sarajevans who died from 1992 to 1995. On Feb. 5, 1994, 67 Sarajevans died at the Markale marketplace, and 142 were injured by a mortar shell fired from a Republika of Srpska (RS) army position. Sarajevo commemorates market massacre Stanislav Galic, then a regimental commander of the RS army, was sentenced to life in prison by the Hague for the four-year shelling of Sarajevo. About 340,000 people lived in Sarajevo during the siege of the city, which lasted 1,479 days. In that time, more than 11,000 citizens lost their lives, and about 50,000 were injured. During the siege, 1,601 Sarajevan children perished, and an average of 329 shells fell on the Bosnian capital every day. A commemorative session of parliament was held to mark Feb. 5—Remembrance Day for Sarajevans who died and the anniversary of the Markale massacre. Flowers were laid on the commemorative monument by Bosnian Presidency member Zeljko Komsic, Federation Vice-President Spomenka Micic, a delegation from the Sarajevo City and Canton, municipal representatives and relatives of the victims.
