The EU has warned Macedonia that all integration activities will be halted should the pre-election violence continue. At a meeting with Macedonian President Branko Crvenkovski, EU ambassadors warned that such violent incidents were not becoming of EU candidate states. EU warns Macedonia over election violence At the start of the election campaign, armed clashes broke out between two opposing Albanian parties in the north-west of the country, the ruling Democratic Party of Albanians (DPA) and the opposition Democratic Union for Integration. Crvenkovski called on the party leaders, Menduh Thaci and Ali Ahmeti, to focus on stopping the violence, and called on the perpetrators to be brought to justice. Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski also appealed for an end to the violence, following a meeting with his coalition partner Thaci and a telephone conversation with Ahmeti. Ahmeti’s supporters held a protest in Tetovo yesterday to condemn the armed attack on their party leader’s vehicle in the village of Rakovec. Macedonian police have been unable to track down suspect Vulnet Dxelili, though they have arrested Faruk Biljali, who was confirmed to have been with Dxelili at the scene of the crime.
