Large parts of Bulgaria have been paralyzed this morning by bad weather. Meanwhile, a state of emergency has been declared in the central region of Sopot. Cold snap grips Bulgaria Schools have been closed in that part of the country, while the authorities have advised citizens not to go on the roads because of icy conditions. The bad weather led to a state of emergency being declared on Thursday and Friday around the town of Rusa in the north, and Dobrich in the north-east. Varna Airport, on the Black sea coast, has also been shut. Traffic along the Danube, which has partly frozen, is still moving slowly, while the port at Rusa has been closed. The cold snap, combined with problems with the heating system in Sofia and Veliko Tarnovo have led to the highest consumption of electricity in Bulgaria in the last 19 years, announced the Bulgarian Electricity Company. The cold weather has claimed nine victims in Bulgaria since the turn of the year.
