Washington will investigate alleged ties between a group of ethnic Albanian extremists and radical Islamists. The group, led by Presevo Valley-born Lirim Jakupi, was neutralized by the Macedonian security forces last week in western Macedonia. U.S. to probe Jakupi – radical Islamist links The main reason for the move is the fact that two radical Islamists were killed in the operation and the sophisticated weapons that were seized on that occasion, a Washington administration official told Tanjug news agency Thursday. The U.S. interest was sparked by, it is said, the links between two members of that armed formation: Ramadan Shiti and Metin Islami, with the Wahhabis in Kosovo, western Macedonia and Sandzak. Shiti and Islami, killed by the Macedonian special units close to the village of Brodec on the slopes of Mt. Sara, were previously investigated by western intelligence services for their ties with a series of foundations, mainly from Saudi Arabia, which aided them in organizing the spread of the Wahhabi movement in Kosovo and its vicinity, the U.S. official said. They escaped a Kosovo prison in August, allegedly with the help of those in charge of the prison. Macedonian police put seized arms on display (Beta)
