Suriani conveyed to Vucic the greetings of Roman Catholic Pope Francis, underscoring that he arrived in Serbia with a wish to contribute to the welfare of the country and people.

He commended Vucic's commitment to reconciliation and closer relations in the Western Balkan region, the government said in a statement on Friday.

The prime minister "voiced confidence that with his rich experience Suriani would contribute to strengthening good and stable relations between Serbia and the Holy See even further."

Vucic also expressed his desire to mark "Gregorian calendar" Easter along with the archbishop and Catholic believers, and they agreed to attend holy mass together on March 27, when Serbia's minority Catholic and Protestant Christians will celebrate the holiday.

The country's majority Orthodox believers will celebrate Easter on May 1.
