"Defense minister to be sacked; new one won't be appointed"

Vucic previously said that Gasic would be removed from his cabinet after making offensive sexist remarks aimed at a journalist.

According to the newspaper, "it is for the moment most likely" that a new minister will not be elected because of the upcoming early elections that will probably be scheduled on March 7.

Procedurally, the request for the dismissal of Gasic will be forwarded to the National Assembly as soon as the prime minister initials it.

Assembly President Maja Gojkovic will have to include the proposal on the agenda of the first upcoming sitting, but only after the lapse of at least five days from the day she receives the document, said the paper.

It then quoted a source as saying that assembly could deal with this issue around February 25, "and in that case Gasic's successor would not have to be elected."

This is the case because the prime minister has a formal obligation to propose a candidate within 15 days after the previous minister had been dismissed by the assembly, which would in this case happen on March 10 - i.e. after the assembly has been dissolved and early elections called.

For this reason, said the newspaper, "Plan B will be activated": the caretaker government will appoint one of the ministers to coordinate the defense portfolio until a new cabinet has been elected.
