Former Croatian President Stjepan Mesic has said that Serbian President Tomislav Nikolic should be given some time to “free himself from the past”. “Since he has already made several political U-turns in his career, I am not ruling out a possibility that he will make such a maneuver now,” he wrote in an article for Novi Sad-based daily Dnevnik. “Serbian president should be given time to prove himself“ He added that Nikolic should be openly told what would not be tolerated and that he should be given time for a “transitional period”. “In this period it will be determined whether we are dealing with Nikolic, a chetnik duke, or with a redesigned Nikolic who is completely aware of the reality he lives in and even more, who is aware of the needs of the country he is running. As far as his wishes and dreams are concerned, it would be best if he left them behind. You live and work in the reality,” Mesic explained. He assessed that would have the first chance to prove whether he could take a stand that would not represent an obstacle to the regional cooperation in the policy toward Bosnia-Herzegovina. “If he is strong enough to do what his predecessor did not, namely to tell Serbs in Bosnia-Herzegovina ‘Your homeland is Bosnia-Herzegovina, your capital is Sarajevo and you should look for solutions to all your problems there’, then we will know that we can move forward with such Serbian president,” Mesic pointed out. According to him, Serbia “never has to recognize the state of Kosovo” but it has to allow others in the region to cooperate with Kosovo and it has to open the border with Kosovo, “if nothing else then for the sake of the local Serbs”. “The future does not lie in the change of borders but in their opening,” the former Croatian president concluded.
