EU Enlargement Commissioner Stefan Fule has said he believes Serbia will get the EU candidate status at the European Council meeting in December. He told daily Politika he believed the talks between Belgrade and Pristina would be resumed and all agreements implemented, resulting in the candidate status for Serbia. EU commissioner: Serbia will get candidate status “But to get the start date for the accession talks, Belgrade will have to make significant progress in its relations Pristina,” Fule added. The enlargement commissioner stated he could not say if it could be done before the European Council meeting in December, but added that the key priority was realistic and could be completed in a relatively short time span, which was why he was prepared to report about such progress at any moment. “The European Commission recommended that Serbia be granted the status without any additional requirements, expecting that Belgrade would continue the talks with Pristina and start implementing in good faith the agreements reached so far,” Fule was quoted as saying. “Besides the candidate status, it is essential that Belgrade start a process of improving its relations with Pristina in order to begin the accession talks, he remarked. This way the two sides will reach a new threshold in their relations, facilitating further progress regarding issues with northern Kosovo,” the commissioner explained. “The area north of the Ibar River is a part of Kosovo, which according to international law, more precisely UN Security Council Resolution 1244, is defined as one legal entity. Therefore, the key public services north of the Ibar River have to be subject to the same rules and regulations that apply in the rest of Kosovo in order to establish the rule of law in that area,” Fule concluded.
