Ministry for Kosovo State Secretary Oliver Ivanovic says the dialogue will be continued if the EC convinced the U.S. ambassador to exert pressure on Pristina. “The problem is that the European Commission does not have as much influence on the Pristina authorities as the U.S. and its ambassador could have," Ivanovic pointed out. State secretary: Belgrade-Pristina talks could continue "The question is how successful the Commission will be in trying to convince the U.S. ambassador to be a part of the joint pressure on Pristina. If that happens, and I believe it will, the continuation of the dialogue is certain,“ the state secretary added. He said that a part of the EC’s report that refers to Kosovo was very critical “without a good reason”. The state secretary stressed that the Belgrade-Pristina dialogue “has always been hanging on the edge because the partner on the other side is trying to politicize every topic so much that it turns into a direct or an indirect recognition of Kosovo’s independence”. According to him, the momentary standstill in the negotiations does not represent a big problem. Ivanovic said that northern Kosovo mayors were legitimate partners in the entire process, especially since the implementation of a part of the agreement would affect them. “Serbs insist that violence must not be ignored. Some kind of solution needs to be found. Mayors are aware of that and that it why they started the talks with KFOR representatives,” he explained. The state secretary pointed out that removal of the barricades would not be a good solution and that communication between the northern Kosovo mayors and KFOR was the right way to find an acceptable solution. “That’s the key, if relations become more relaxed there EULEX will fit into the positive outcome. It’s not sustainable in the long run to have KFOR at the crossings, EULEX should return as soon as possible,” Ivanovic concluded. Oliver Ivanovic (Beta, file)
