The Serbian authorities have decided to postpone elections for the Bosniak (Muslim) National Council, previously set to take place on April 17. This was announced on Wednesday in Belgrade by Local Administration and Human and Minority Rights Minister Milan Markovic. Bosniak Council elections postponed He said that a new date would be determined after new consultations with participants in last year's elections for the council. Markovic also revealed that the decision to postpone elections came after consultations he held last week with representatives of three Bosniak lists, none of which registered for the April 17 elections. The original voting took place in June last year, when elections were held for councils of all of the country's ethnic minorities. But the Bosniak council was subsequently formed by the Bosniak Cultural Union, led by Mufti Muamer Zukorlic, in a manner that was contested by the other two lists, and the Human Rights Ministry. Bosniak Cultural Union President Samir Tandir said earlier today that "as far as we are concerned the Bosniak National Council has already been formed". But he added that "if talks were to start to include several issues, we would be ready to consider taking part in new elections". "This dialogue and wider discussion would have to encompass talks about other open issues in Sandzak, such as attempts to install a parallel Islamic Community, accrediting of the International University, reinstalling religion teachers who were kicked out of their schools illegally and unconstitutionally, as well as talks on returning the waqf property to the Islamic Community (in Serbia)," said he.
