Government withdraws pension bill

The government today in Belgrade decided to withdraw from parliamentary procedure a draft bill on amendments to the Law on Pensions and Disability Insurance.

The government today in Belgrade decided to withdraw from parliamentary procedure a draft bill on amendments to the Law on Pensions and Disability Insurance. It was announced that the government was ready to talk and discuss all contentious issues regarding the bill. Government withdraws pension bill However, the government added that a new draft would soon be sent back to parliament. Representative of the Alliance of Independent Unions of Serbia (SSSS) Ljubisav Orbovic told the news to a rally in Novi Sad, north of Belgrade, and said negotiations with the government would start as soon as Monday. Some 5,000 people gathered for the protest against the draft welcomed the announcement with applause and ovations. Orbovic told them that in the future, decisions about issues concerning workers will not be made without unions. Previously, unions in Serbia announced a big strike in Belgrade for the day in early November when MPs were scheduled to vote on the now withdrawn law. Orbovic and Ranka Savic, who heads the Association of Free and Independent Unions, yesterday afternoon met wit a visiting IMF delegation to discuss the proposed changes to the country's pension system. Previously, Orbovic said that measures that the unions will use, in order to prevent MPs from voting in favor of the bill on, "will not be much different than those used in France", which is completely paralyzed by strikes staged by public sector workers.
