The Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) is requesting a special session of parliament after the ICJ makes known its advisory opinion in the Kosovo case on Thursday. The top UN court will rule on the legality under international law of the Kosovo Albanian unilateral declaration made in early 2008, and rejected by Serbia as an illegal act of secession. Parties want parliament debate on Kosovo Now the party is calling for MPs to meet in order to determine Serbia’s new and efficient policy. “Now is the time to publicly define the policy we will lead after the ICJ opinion,” LDP leader Cedomir Jovanovic said on Monday in Belgrade. He stated that such a parliament session was important to Serbs in Kosovo and other citizens of Serbia because without such a debate, Serbia could "easily go into a new 'kosovization' of its policies". Jovanovic said he considered the upcoming ICJ ruling Serbia’s biggest internal and foreign policy challenge in 2010 and pointed out that the state’s “behavior” after Thursday July 22, when the court is expected to announce its opinion, could permanently determine the political and economic future of the country and the region. The LDP leader also stressed that the ICJ’s opinion, regardless of its content, must not be a foundation for political conflict "between Serbia and its western allies and neighbors" and added that the prime minister and ministries needed to explain to parliament what big challenges Serbia was facing and "together define answers to every possible scenario”. Also in Belgrade on Monday, the opposition DSS spoke in favor of a parliament session dedicated to the situation in Kosovo. DSS spokesman Petar Petkovic told a news conference that parliament should meet to discuss the government strategy for Kosovo, since the International Court of Justice will deliver its opinion on the legality of Kosovo's independence on July 22. Petkovic added that the government should change the way it behaves in terms of Kosovo, stating that "the manner of the current government is to make decisions secretly, behind closed doors, instead of presenting them to parliament".
