President meets with Brazil's foreign minister

During his one-day visit to Belgrade on Sunday, Brazilian Foreign Minister Celso Luiz Nunes Amorim met with Serbian President Boris Tadić.

During his one-day visit to Belgrade on Sunday, Brazilian Foreign Minister Celso Luiz Nunes Amorim met with Serbian President Boris Tadic. Tadic thanked his guest for his country's principled support to the preservation of Serbia's sovereignty and territorial integrity, said a statement after the meeting. Amorim is the first Brazilian foreign minister to pay an official visit to Belgrade. Brazil has not recognized the Kosovo Albanian unilateral declaration of independence, observing the rule of international law and the decisions of the UN Security Council, said the statement. Amorim also met with Serbian Prime Minister Mirko Cvetkovic on Sunday, to tell him that Brazil would keep providing active support to Serbia's diplomatic initiative before the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague. The court is expected to give its opinion on the legality of the UDI later this year. Cvetkovic thanked Amorim for Brazil's support when it came to Serbia's position of Kosovo. Belgrade has rejected the proclamation as illegal. Cvetkovic pointed out that Brazil and Serbia have traditionally had good and friendly bilateral relations, the Serbian government said in a statement. The officials agreed that, so far, the economic cooperation between the two countries has been below their possibilities and expressed interest in improving cooperation, particularly in the area of agriculture and infrastructure. Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister Ivica Dacic also met with the visiting Brazilian foreign minister, to discuss police cooperation between the two countries in the fight against transnational organized crime. Amorim expressed great satisfaction with the Memorandum of Understanding on the Fight Against Transnational Organized Crime, signed by Dacic and Brazilian Justice Minister in June this year, MUP said in a statement. Dacic stressed that the signing of the Memorandum enabled the cooperation and exchange of information between the two countries' police services, taking the example of the recent confiscation of cocaine in Brazil, performed based on information from Serbia, passed on to Brazil by the British authorities, according to this. Tadić and Amorim discussed the bilateral relations between the two countries and improvement of economic cooperation, the Serbian president's press service said.
