Interior Minister Ivica Dacic has said that the state "must define its stance toward the increasing number of attacks on police officers". Dacic, who is also first deputy prime minister and leader of the ruling Socialists (SRS), was visiting the Vrbas police station in the north of the country this Saturday, when he said that in some cases perpetrators of these attacks receive lenient sentences – "or there are no verdicts for years". Ahead of the Russian President Dmitry Medvedev's visit here, scheduled for October 20, Dacic said that "very wide security measures" would be undertaken. The minister also "apologized to Belgraders" over the fact that some roads will be closed during the visit. He also stated that while he had no doubt that the citizens would react to Medvedev's arrival with enthusiasm, such security measures were customary for visits on that level. Dacic was in Vrbas to campaign along with the SPS coalition partners ahead of the local elections in that town, scheduled for next Sunday.
